Your Caregiving Journey

Your Caregiving Journey

Who Are the Caregivers?

Family caregivers come in all ages, genders, living circumstances, and are found in all locations. Family caregiving is an equal opportunity lifestyle and natural cycle. No matter the age or gender of the caregiver or the age or gender of the care receiver, equal access to skill building and resources becomes a win-win for the family.

In the United States, caregivers:

  • are an estimated 40 Million strong and spend $190 Billion each year on their care recipients for out-of-pocket, care-related expenses.
  • find their unpaid care is equal to $470 Billion which is an amount that exceeds all home care services and Medicaid spending.
  • are employed full-time 59% of the time and report difficulty at work, due to the combined conflict of caregiving and career roles.
  • are 60% female and 40% male.
  • spend an average of 22 hours per week caregiving.
  • generations are changing as The Baby Boomer generation has long been the face of family caregiving but there is a rise in Millennial caregivers who make up 25% of the caregivers.

“The economic value of caregiving that is done nationally is greater than the sales revenue of Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Apple combined. That is the scale.” – U.S. Administration for Community Living at the 2018 South Palm Beach, FL, Fearless Caregiver Conference, July 17, 2018

Caregiving impacts every family at some point.

“There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.”Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady of the United States and Founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving

Male Caregivers

Male caregivers may experience a different type of discrimination. The personal care tasks historically performed by women are now being performed by men. As a society, we find our views more comfortable with daughters caring for their fathers than sons caring for their mothers. Many caregivers may not have been taught these hands-on caregiving skills in their family of origin.

We invite male caregivers who may be hesitant to ask for assistance to schedule a virtual care coaching session. Family caregiving is an equal opportunity lifestyle and natural cycle.

Care Partners/Caregivers

virtual care coach partnersWe prefer using the term Care Partner instead of the more traditional word Caregiver. In order for a caregiver to exist there also needs to be a care receiver. Care Partner more closely describes the finely balanced relationship of commitment and respect between the two.

More and more, people of all ages find themselves becoming Care Partners while trying to maintain a balanced personal life. Many Care Partners work full time in addition to caring for a loved one. Caring for a parent, spouse or partner, child, friend, or neighbor, brings changes to your own life requiring many adjustments. This experience of Care Partnering is often impacted by family dynamics. Whether the family is closely connected, or relationships are more complicated, effective Family Care Partnering requires a team effort.
